Houses and Homes

People living in Mesoamerica in the time of the Aztecs had very basic materials to build their houses and had a lot less to use then we do today. So they had to use local materials, but caring these long distance was quite difficult because they didn't have any wheel transport.

The materials that were available to them were stone, which was mostly for the wealthier families because it was the most expensive and the longest lasting material, or the cheaper option was sun-dried mud bricks, called adobe, or mud smeared over a frame work of wooden frames. In these houses the Aztecs didn't have any furniture, only a few reed mats to sleep on and some jars and baskets for storage. Everyone slept on reed mats that were made, even the wealthier families or people because that was all the Aztecs had.

Clothing

Aztec clothes were very simple. Woman wore a skirt and tunic, and men wore a cloak, but there were strict laws on what different people could and couldn't wear. Commoners or ordinary families were supposed to wear plain, knee-length clothes, woven from rough ixtle and they weren't allowed to wear any jewellery. The Nobles were allowed to wear longer-length clothes made of fine white cotton,  decorated with embroidery or woven patterns. They could also wear jewellery including earrings, necklaces, labrets (lip-plugs) and bracelets of gold and precious stones.

Family Life

Families were very important to the Aztecs. Each member of the family had special responsibilities. Men produced food or made money to but it and women looked after the children. When the children turned about six years old they were expected to do some work and household jobs by helping their parents. Parents would teach their children all the skills they would need to survive in adult life. children from the families of expert craftworkers learned their parents special skills.

Because family life was so important to the Aztecs marriages were often arranged by a matchmaker or a young couple's parents. Girls and boys got married when they were around 16 to 20 years old.
